Herd Homes® Systems were invented by Tom and Kathy Pow, Northland dairy farmers.

The Pows have a  dairy farm in Northland and weren't satisfied with wintering facilities for livestock. Having used cubicle barns, stand off areas on concrete, metal, wood chips sawdust and sacrifice paddocks, all systems worked but not for long enough periods and with associated problems. From that point onwards development has continued throughout NZ with the help of farmers and AgResearch NZ.

These problems had to be solved while increasing the profitability of the farm. 

The Pow's started with Herd Homes® Shelters on their Northland dairy farms. Over the past few years several design changes have occurred following feedback from users and research work.

The business has rapidly grown and Herd Homes® Shelters are now located right throughout the country. Considerable benefits are being gained right throughout the season which means it is not just a Northland or Southland thing.

The introduction of shade cloth in the ceiling of the vented roof option has significantly reduced summer heat stress on cows. The airflow design feature ensures the cows own body heat is not lost but helps maintain warmth of the animals in the shelter and assists with drying of the floor.
